Oct. 10: Inside/Outside Letter Writing Night
Thursday, October 10, 2024 | 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Writers Room
229 N. 34th St., 3rd Floor, Philadelphia, PA
Join the Abolitionist Law Center, Human Rights Coalition, and Philadelphia Muslim Freedom Fund for in-person letter writing to youth in jail in Pennsylvania!
Every day, more than 36,000 men and women are housed in one of 24 prisons in PA. Currently and formerly incarcerated survivors have stated again and again how important letters of support are to their well-being. Letters are also important strategies to build relationships, organizing across prison walls, and have been critical to social movements everywhere.
Join us in responding to letters from people on the inside who are facing grave human rights abuses and seeking support. There will also be an opportunity to sign up to be a long-term correspondent to folks who are surviving solitary confinement. Solidarity with prisoners now!
Our letter-writing nights take place on the second Thursday of every month. Last month, we learned about youth being charged as adults and the conditions for youth in detention (including solitary confinement and some not having been outside since last year). If you live in the Philadelphia area and missed it, but want to sign up to court watch for hearings where a judge determines if a youth will be charged as an adult, please reach out to Lolo at lolo@alcenter.org.
The space is wheelchair-accessible. Light snacks and drinks will be provided.
Questions? Accessibility needs? Email Sam at sam@alcenter.org.
If you can’t make this one, we will see you in November!
