Sep. 12: Inside/Outside Letter Writing Night

Thursday, September 12, 2024 |  6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Writers Room
229 N. 34th St., 3rd Floor, Philadelphia, PA

Join the Abolitionist Law Center, Human Rights Coalition, and Philadelphia Muslim Freedom Fund for in-person letter writing to youth in jail in Pennsylvania!

In September, we will be hearing from Philly-based youth orgs YASP and YSRP, and writing to youth and children locked up in Philly’s adult jail. Currently, there are 20 youth detained at State Road, many of them for longer than a year or two. They face horrific jail conditions, including solitary confinement.

At the same time, there have been increases in children being prosecuted as adults. This is the result of Judge McDermott, who has the power to get kids out of the adult criminal justice system and back into the juvenile system where they belong. However, she almost never does this – though she can — and is even worse than the judge before her. ALC will be speaking more about our efforts to fight this through court watching.

Kids should not be charged as adults and they should not be locked up! Join us to write letters of encouragement.

The space is wheelchair-accessible. Light snacks and drinks will be provided.

Our letter-writing nights take place on the second Thursday of every month. If you can’t make this one, we will see you in October!
