James A. Byrne U.S. Courthouse: Courtroom 9-A
601 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA
Plaintiffs in three consolidated class action cases are seeking to end prolonged solitary confinement and solitary confinement of those with mental health conditions in the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (DOC). The DOC has filed a motion to try to transfer the case from the Philadelphia federal court in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania to the Middle District of Pennsylvania.
Five of the six plaintiffs are from Philadelphia, and Philadelphia is the city that is most impacted by the DOC’s solitary confinement practices in Pennsylvania. Solitary confinement is torture and those held in solitary are disproportionately from and return to Philadelphia.
The judge has scheduled this oral argument on the motion to transfer the cases’ venue.
Show up to show the court that these cases are important to the people of Philadelphia and should remain in the federal court here.
