We are in the midst of deeply troubling times beset with chaos and uncertainty. While it’s tempting to make comparisons and believe that none of what we are experiencing has happened before, many of the same tactics have been used against marginalized communities and radical revolutionaries throughout this country’s history. When we witness aspiring and current citizens and students being detained, removed from their communities, shipped hundreds of miles away, and their Constitutional rights flouted, we must understand these events are a more blatant and aggressive form of ongoing dehumanization and oppression.
In that, our job at ALC is ever more clear. Whether it’s fighting for the rights and freedom of our people currently caged in jails and prisons or those who on the outside live under an ever-increasing threat of criminalization and blatant attempts to silence dissent, we know we must be relentless and stand unapologetically in solidarity with movement partners. As the radical revolutionary Assata Shakur once said:
“It is our duty to fight for our freedom. It is our duty to win. We must love each other and support each other. We have nothing to lose but our chains.”
This month, we are proud to share some of our work that will inform how we expand and adapt to meet this moment and the moments to come.
