July 06, 2026
TribLive: “Allegheny County Jail’s warden, who has been in place since January 2025, announced Monday he will leave for a position in North Carolina.
Trevor Wingard, who has been praised for his work at the Second Avenue facility in Pittsburgh, will become the chief deputy secretary for North Carolina’s Department of Adult Corrections.
The move puts him closer to his children.
‘Leaving Allegheny County right now is truly bittersweet,’ he said in a news release.
Wingard, who took the jail job after retiring from the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, said he wasn’t looking to leave, ‘but the opportunity arose to take a job in North Carolina closer to my children, and that was the one offer I could not pass up.’
County Executive Sara Innamorato praised Wingard for his work at the jail.
She cited improvements in medical care, intake procedures, standards for professionalism among jail staff and increased transparency with the Jail Oversight Board and the public….
Tanisha Long, an advocate who works for the Abolitionist Law Center, said she hopes the focus remains on continuing to provide programming, improving medical care and reducing the use of force.
‘In the past year and half, we have seen significant positive changes in the Allegheny County Jail — some achieved through litigation and community organizing — while other positive changes came as a direct result of the leadership of Warden Wingard,’ Long said.”
