One of the things I don’t want us to lose sight of tonight is the role that the prison struggle played in the abolition movement. The prison struggle began on the shores of Africa in medieval pens that held human beings in wait for slave ships.

It continues today in the form of mass human caging of descendants of those people. Poor and working-class people in modern day penitentiaries or what they call state correctional institutions, where human beings are held as legal slaves violating international law.
