Al Depiro

Al DePiro (they/them) is ALC’s finance and operations director. Through their prior experience as ALC’s administrative manager and their involvement in abolitionist organizing, Al has seen first-hand how ALC’s unwavering commitment to people directly impacted by the criminal punishment system makes a material difference in the lives of people who are incarcerated and shapes the abolitionist movement in PA. With an educational background in both neuroscience and gender studies, and professional experience in a number of general operations positions at dynamic and growth-oriented businesses, Al is excited to bring their passion for data, financial management, and implementing effective collaborative processes to support vital movement work.

Al has been active in prisoner support work since participating in the Inside/Out Prison Exchange Program at the University of Pittsburgh. They strongly believe in the collective power that develops out of community care, and are a part of a number of Pittsburgh-area projects that focus on connecting incarcerated and non-incarcerated people in conversation and community. They run a monthly Letters to Prisoners pen pal group via the Mr. Roboto Project, and recently published Not Your Average Noodle, a commissary cookbook, in collaboration with their incarcerated pen pals.
