February 2025 Newsletter

At ALC, freedom is our mission every day. Whether looking forward or backward, the ongoing quest for freedom is a significant theme in Black life, history, and culture, and for all who dream of a world in which all are free. Centering Black History/Futures is an important lens for liberation work, for as the Black feminist Combahee River Collective Statement of 1977 declared, “If Black women were free, it would mean that everyone else would have to be free since our freedom would necessitate the destruction of all the systems of oppression.”

For the Black History Month program at Eastern State Penitentiary, ALC’s Executive Director Saleem Holbrook centered the Black Radical tradition, discussing the brilliance and influence of George Jackson and Assata Shakur.

“When we talk about the Civil rights movement a lot of times we are only taught about MLK, Ella Baker, and Julian Bond. But there was another side of our Black Liberation movement that was seeking more than civil rights, they were seeking human rights and dignity.” – Saleem Holbrook

This month, we are proud to share updates from our ongoing efforts to win freedom, human rights, and dignity for incarcerated people, which is the foundation of everything we do at ALC.
