WTAE ABC: The death of an inmate who was assaulted at the Allegheny County Jail is under investigation by police and jail officials.
County police said the 44-year-old inmate was assaulted by “multiple incarcerated people” who entered his jail cell just before 12:50 p.m. Wednesday. The inmate was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
‘Everyone involved in this incident is accounted for, and the investigation is ongoing at this time,’ county police said in a statement.
Defense attorney Casey White confirmed to Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 that his client, Tyrone Good, was the inmate killed….
Tanisha Long, the Community Organizer for the Abolitionist Law Center, said the incident underscores the need for change when it comes to the size of the inmate population.
‘You have people who are sitting in there on like probation detainers, or people who are just like on the streets and maybe they’re acting up, and now they’re in the jail,’ Long said. ‘And then you put all of these people in this pressure cooker-type situation, and you have the CO’s who are claiming that they’re understaffed and they can’t handle everybody. Then we need to let people out.'”
